Is it just me or is this a wee bit offensive? The death penalty does not exist in Judaism. Well, it does but logistically speaking the laws of the Torah and Talmud make it next to impossible. The Jews had nothing to do with the death of Jesus. Pontius Pilate, a Roman, signed the warrant. It was the Roman soldiers who crucified him. Know your history, Mr. Pope.
I can't even begin to get into the historically disastrous implications of statements such as these.
"But the Pope said when St Matthew wrote ‘the Jews’ he meant the mob in Pilate’s courtyard and not the Jewish people in general."
